This Indian Ocean Arabian Dhow Model was specially designed & built by the plank on bulkhead method (joining multiple small pieces of Western Red Cedar wood together on the hull). The sails, made from fine linen, are carefully rigged with hand-knotted lines, while a precisely crafted wooden rudder enhances the realism. A smooth matte finish highlights the wood's natural grain, adding to its elegance.
Set on a solid wooden base, this dhow model makes a striking display piece. Its open deck, finely detailed railings, and realistic rigging bring the vessel to life, while the matte wood finish enhances its timeless charm. Dhow is the generic name of a number of traditional sailing vessels with one or more masts with settee or sometimes lateen sails, used in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean region. Typically sporting long thin hulls, dhows are trading vessels primarily used to carry heavy items, such as fruit, fresh water, or other heavy merchandise, along the coasts of Eastern Arabia, East Africa, Yemen and coastal South Asia (Pakistan, India, Bangladesh). The dhow was known for two distinctive features including its aforementioned triangular or lateen sail, and also for its stitched construction. Stitched boats were made by sewing the hull boards together with fibers, cords or thongs. Larger dhows have crews of approximately thirty, smaller ones typically around twelve.
